The smooth trombone of Tommy Dorsey

I am always amazed how smooth Tommy Dorsey’s trombone playing is. Frank Sinatra, who made his first great success in the Dorsey band, said he learned breath control from watching Tommy Dorsey play trombone. Tommy Dorsey said that his playing was heavily influenced by that of Jack Teagarden. Dorsey’s trombone sound is so beautiful it makes me want to cry. So here are two of my favourite Tommy Dorsey tunes.

Song of India

Song of India was written in 1938 by Tommy Dorsey. This clip is from 1941. Dorsey leads his band, with Ziggy Elman on trumpet and Buddy Rich on drums. Buddy Rich went on to form his own band in 1946.

I’m Getting Sentimental Over You

First recorded by the Dorsey band in 1935, I’m Getting Sentimental Over You is considered Dorsey’s theme tune. Again Dorsey’s trombone playing is just beautiful. I think it is an ideal tune for slow Balboa, which I will be teaching at some point in our Pink Swing classes.
